Hombre joven con expresión pensativa entre dos pilas de libros, representando la duda entre los exámenes DELE y SIELE de español para extranjeros.

Did you know that more than 24 million people study Spanish as a foreign language? Spanish is indeed the second most widely spoken language in the world by number of native speakers and one of the most sought-after as a foreign language. With this growing demand, more and more students are looking to obtain a Spanish certificate. But an important question arises: which exam should you choose, the DELE or the SIELE?

In a globalised world where command of languages opens professional, academic and personal doors, an internationally recognised Spanish certificate can make a real difference. Both the DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) and the SIELE (Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española) serve that purpose, but with very different approaches and features.

The DELE has been around since 1989, while the much more recent SIELE has rapidly gained ground among younger candidates and professional profiles. Why? We explain below.

What are the DELE and the SIELE?

Before deciding which Spanish exam suits you best, it is essential to understand exactly what the DELE and the SIELEare, what they are based on and which institutions stand behind them.

DELE: an official diploma with global recognition

The DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is an official certificate issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education and Vocational Training. It is an in-person exam that assesses candidates’ language skills at specific levels, from A1 to C2, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

One of the most valued aspects of the DELE is that the diploma does not expire. Once obtained, it is valid for life. It also enjoys wide international recognition, especially in academic, immigration and legalcontexts. Many universities in Spain and Latin America require it for higher education, and it is also requested for citizenship or visa procedures in some countries.

SIELE: a modern, fast and flexible exam

The SIELE (Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española) is a joint initiative of the Instituto Cervantes, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the University of Salamanca and the University of Buenos Aires. It is a fully digital, multilevelexam that assesses the four language skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression and interaction, and oral expression and interaction.

Unlike the DELE, the SIELE does not require you to choose a specific level. Instead, it assesses the candidate and assigns a level within the A1–C1 range according to performance. This makes it very useful for anyone who is not sure of their current level. It also delivers results faster (within three weeks), can be sat at authorised centres or even from home, and lets you choose between the full exam or independent modules, which gives users great flexibility.

As you can see, both exams serve similar functions but respond to different profiles and needs. The DELE takes a more traditional, official approach, while the SIELE offers agility and adaptability to the digital and professional world.

Which one suits your profile?

Choosing between the DELE and the SIELE does not depend solely on which is easier or faster, but on which best fits your personal, academic or professional goals. Each exam answers different needs, lifestyles and expectations.

Academic or immigration profile: the DELE is your best option

If you are an international student planning to enter a university in Spain or another Spanish-speaking country, the DELE is the stronger choice. Many academic institutions require this certificate as part of the admissions process. What is more, if you are applying for Spanish nationality or for a visa or residence permit, the DELE is the only exam recognised by Spain’s Ministry of the Interior..

In these cases it is also worth highlighting that the DELE is valid forever, which means you will not have to sit it again in the future, saving time and money in the long run.

Professional or digital profile: choose SIELE for flexibility and speed

If you need to prove your level of Spanish for a job, an international internship or a scholarship, and you value speed, flexibility and a modern approach, the SIELE fits your circumstances perfectly. You can take it anywhere in the world, even from home with remote invigilation, and the results arrive within three weeks..

You also do not need to know exactly what your level is beforehand. The SIELE’s multilevel format assesses you as a whole and assigns the corresponding level based on your performance, which is ideal if you have not practised for a while or have learned Spanish informally.

Not sure of your level, or need a partial certificate?

This is another area where the SIELE shines. Unlike the DELE, which requires all skills to be assessed, the SIELE lets you choose independent modules, for example only reading comprehension or written expression. That makes it a useful tool for anyone who only wants to certify part of their language knowledge.

Comparison by profile and goals

Candidate with no clear levelSIELEMultilevel assessment that assigns the level automatically.
Private-course or self-taught learnerBoth (depending on the end goal)DELE if you want permanence; SIELE if you want agility or immediate results.

As you can see, there is no single “best exam”, only an exam that is better suited to each purpose. Defining your profile and your short- and long-term goals will let you make a more informed and efficient decision.

examen de español DELE vs SIELE

Advantages and disadvantages at a glance

Choosing between the DELE and the SIELE depends not only on the type of exam but also on its practical benefits and its possible drawbacks for your needs. Both exams are backed by highly prestigious institutions, but they take different approaches. Below we set out their main advantages and disadvantagesso you can make a more strategic decision.

Advantages of the DELE

  1. Official, permanent certification: the DELE is recognised by the Spanish government and its diplomas do not expire, which makes it a long-term investment.
  2. Global academic and legal recognition: it is required in many citizenship and visa procedures and university processes. If your goal is to live, study or work in Spanish-speaking countries, this diploma carries strong institutional weight.
  3. Assessment by specific levels: you can certify a particular level (B2, for example), which is useful if you need to meet defined academic or professional requirements.
  4. Long tradition and prestige: the DELE has existed since 1989 and is widely respected in formal contexts.

Disadvantages of the DELE

  1. Less flexibility: you must sit it on specific dates and at specific venues. You cannot take the exam online.
  2. Long waiting times: results can take up to 3 months.
  3. A more demanding, structured exam: it requires specific preparation and a balanced performance across all skills.
  4. Higher cost: depending on the country and the level, it can be more expensive than the SIELE.

Advantages of the SIELE

  1. Complete flexibility: you can take it from home or at authorised centres, on any available date.
  2. Fast results: you will have your report within three weeks at most.
  3. Digital, innovative format: ideal for digital nomads, modern professionals and young students.
  4. Multilevel and modular: you do not need to know your level before taking the exam and you can choose specific modules (comprehension only, for example).
  5. Useful for job applications and scholarships: many companies and institutions value the SIELE’s fast, up-to-date certification.

Disadvantages of the SIELE

  1. Certification with an expiry date: the diploma is valid for 5 years, which means you may eventually have to renew it.
  2. Not valid for Spanish citizenship procedures: at present it is not accepted in legal or immigration processes that require an official certificate.
  3. No option to retake specific parts: if you fail one skill in the full exam, you have to repeat the whole test (unless you choose modules).
  4. Does not assess level C2: the SIELE only goes up to level C1 on the CEFR.
