Official German certificates: Goethe, TestDaF or TELC?

certificaciones oficiales de alemán

Learning German is a real challenge, but it is also a door to academic, professional and migration opportunities. In 2024, more than 15 million people worldwide were studying German as a foreign language, according to the Goethe-Institut. That makes it one of the most sought-after languages globally, especially given its economic weight and its importance within the European Union.

Interestingly, Germany is the second most popular country for international students after the USA. Many universities require an official language certificate as part of their admission requirements, which makes the Goethe, TestDaF and TELC exams key reference points.

Germany has also introduced labour migration routes that take language certificates into account when granting work and residence permits. These cover sectors such as healthcare, engineering, technology and customer service. Choosing the right certificate is therefore not only a question of level, but of personal and professional strategy.

Goethe-Zertifikat: the classic, global option

The Goethe-Zertifikat is issued by the Goethe-Institut and is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), covering levels A1 to C2. It is widely recognised around the world by employers, universities and government authorities.

Key features:

  • It can be used to meet visa and German citizenship requirements.
  • Levels available: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2.
  • Global recognition by educational institutions, companies and immigration authorities.
  • Focus on real communication skills (reading, listening, writing and speaking).
  • Exams available in more than 90 countries.
  • It has no expiry date.

TestDaF: for German universities

The TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) is ideal for anyone who wants to study at a German university. It assesses levels B2 to C1 and is designed specifically for academic contexts.

Key features:

  • Ideal for bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral programmes in Germany.
  • Levels assessed: B2 to C1 (TestDaF-Niveaustufen 3 to 5).
  • Accepted by every German university as proof of language proficiency for admission.
  • Format: in-person and also online with remote invigilation.
  • Assessment of reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression and oral expression.
  • Results valid indefinitely (they do not expire).

TELC: flexibility and a professional focus

TELC (The European Language Certificates) offers certificates in 10 languages, including German. Its exams are also based on the CEFR and run from A1 to C2.

Key features:

  • Practical focus on the workplace and on social integration.
  • Levels available: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2.
  • Specific certificates such as:
    • TELC Deutsch B1-B2 Pflege: for nursing staff.
    • TELC Deutsch B2-C1 Medizin: for doctors trained abroad.
    • TELC Deutsch Beruf: for general workplace settings.
    • TELC Deutsch Integrationskurs: for migrants taking integration courses.
  • Recognised in the workplace and by immigration authorities across Europe.
  • In-person exams at authorised centres.
  • It has no expiry date.

Which is best for working professionals?

For professionals looking for a job in Germany, TELC is particularly useful, because it has specific versions such as TELC Beruf and TELC Pflege. These certificates demonstrate language skills applied directly to the workplace. The Goethe-Zertifikat is also valid for a job search, but its focus is more general. TestDaF, on the other hand, is not the best option for this profile, since it is geared towards higher education.

Which is best for students?

The TestDaF is the ideal option for anyone planning to study at university in Germany, as it is accepted by every German university. The Goethe-Zertifikat may also be accepted at some institutions, especially at C1 and C2, but it is not designed specifically for academic life. TELC is less common in a university setting.

Which is best for migrants to Germany?

Migrants looking to settle into German society can benefit in particular from the TELC Deutsch Integrationskurs, which is designed to meet the requirements for permanent residence and citizenship. Goethe is also accepted by the immigration authorities, especially at B1 level. That said, TELC stands out for how closely it matches the official integration courses.

Your ideal certificate: choose wisely

Choosing between Goethe, TestDaF and TELC is not a trivial decision. Each certificate answers a different profile and a different goal. Goethe offers a solid, universal foundation, TestDaF is the key to German universities, and TELC stands out for its practical, work-focused approach.

Before you sign up for an exam, ask yourself: do I want to study, work or move to Germany? The answer will point you to the certificate that best fits your plans.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Which of these certificates is easiest to pass?

It depends on the level and the candidate’s profile. In general, TELC has more specific options that can make preparation easier if they match your profession. Goethe is more comprehensive but also more demanding. TestDaF takes an academic approach that can be tricky for anyone unfamiliar with university settings.

Can I use the TestDaF to work in Germany?

It is not ideal. Although it is a high-level certificate, its focus is academic and it is not usually the one employers prefer. For work purposes, TELC or Goethe are more suitable, especially TELC Beruf or TELC Pflege.

How long are these certificates valid for?

All Goethe, TestDaF and TELC certificates are valid indefinitely. However, some institutions or employers may require the exam to have been taken within the last 2 years.

Where can I prepare for these exams?

There are official courses at Goethe-Institut centres, universities, authorised TELC centres and online platforms such as DeutschAkademie or Lingoda. There are also free materials on their respective official websites.

Which certificate do I need to obtain German citizenship?

A B1 German certificate is generally required. Both TELC Deutsch B1 and the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 are accepted by the German immigration authorities. The TELC Integrationskurs is particularly recommended for this process.

Can I take any of these exams online?

Yes, the TestDaF can be taken online with remote invigilation. Goethe and TELC generally require an in-person exam, although some centres offer hybrid formats depending on the country.
