Can you deduct language classes in the Renta 2025? A complete guide for Spain

If you are investing in language classes, whether for professional growth or business needs, it is natural to wonder whether that spending brings any tax benefit. The answer is not as straightforward as many expect.
In this guide we explain when you can deduct language classes in the Renta 2025 (Spain’s annual income tax return), what requirements you must meet and what differences apply given your personal or professional situation.

Are language classes deductible in the Renta 2025?

As a general rule, language classes are not deductible for private individuals in the national income tax return. In other words, if you pay for an English or French course yourself, Hacienda (the Spanish tax authority) does not treat it as an ordinary deductible expense.

There are important exceptions, however. It all depends on the context in which the training takes place.

Cases where you can deduct language classes

Self-employed workers: training linked to the activity

If you are self-employed, you can deduct the cost of language classes provided it is directly related to your professional activity.

For example:

  • A consultant who needs English to work with international clients.
  • A tour guide who improves their German to serve clients better.

In these cases the expense counts as training necessary to carry out the activity, and is therefore deductible.

That said, being able to justify it is essential:

  • An invoice in your name or in the name of your business.
  • A clear link between the language and your work.
  • The expense recorded in your accounts.

Companies: subsidised training or deductible expense

For companies the situation is more favourable. Language classes for employees can be:

  1. A deductible expense for corporation tax
As long as the training is linked to the company’s activity.
  2. Subsidised training through FUNDAE
Many companies can recover part or all of the cost through training credits with FUNDAE, the Spanish state foundation for workplace training.

A common example:
A company training its sales team in English to open up an international market.

In this case, as well as being deductible, the cost can be partly subsidised.

A benefit in kind for employees

Another interesting route is language training as a benefit in kind.

If a company pays for an employee’s language classes, that benefit can be exempt from IRPF (Spanish personal income tax) if:

  • It is related to the job.
  • It forms part of a company training plan.

This makes language training a tax-efficient tool for employer and employee alike.

What about regional deductions?

Some comunidades autónomas (Spain’s regional governments) provide for specific deductions related to education or training, which in certain cases can include languages.

For example:

  • Deductions for education costs.
  • Support for training during school years.

These deductions are usually limited to:

  • Formal education.
  • Basic levels (primary, secondary).

In most cases, therefore, adult language courses do not fall within these regional deductions, although it is worth checking the rules in your own region.

Key requirements for deducting language training

If you are in a situation where this expense can be deducted, there are certain criteria to meet:

  • Documentary evidence: a full and valid invoice.
  • A direct link with the economic activity.
  • Proper accounting records (for the self-employed and companies).
  • No duplication of tax benefits (subsidy plus an incorrect deduction).

A frequent mistake is trying to deduct training without being able to demonstrate its professional usefulness. In the event of an inspection, this can mean losing the deduction.

Does investing in languages make sense even without tax relief?

This is where many companies and professionals change perspective.

Even without a direct deduction, language training:

  • Improves employability.
  • Makes international expansion easier.
  • Increases business competitiveness.

In fact, more and more organisations are building language training into their growth strategy.

If you want to understand better how language training fits into professional or business development, you can read more in this article on the ALOS blog about language training for companies.

How to optimise language training for tax purposes

Rather than asking whether it is deductible, the key question is how to structure the investment properly.

Some common strategies:

  • Channel the training through the company.
  • Use the subsidies available.
  • Build languages into corporate training plans.

This lets you maximise the return without relying solely on the tax deduction.

Can I deduct English classes if I am an employee?

Generally no. Employees cannot deduct this type of training in their IRPF return, except in very specific cases involving benefits in kind or company training.

Can a self-employed worker deduct any language course?

No. Only those clearly related to their professional activity. Hacienda can require evidence of that link.

Are online classes deductible too?

Yes, provided they meet the same requirements: a valid invoice, a link with the activity and correct accounting treatment.

Can companies subsidise every language course?

It depends on the training credit available and on the training being properly managed through FUNDAE.

Deducting language classes in the Renta 2025 is not always possible, but there are scenarios where language training brings clear tax advantages, particularly for freelancers and companies.

Beyond the deduction, the key is using languages as a strategic tool for growth.

If you are considering language training for your team or your professional activity, at ALOS we can help you design a plan tailored to your objectives and optimised from a tax point of view as well.
