Five languages on the brink of extinction

While some languages take centre stage worldwide (Chinese, English, Hindi, Spanish and so many others among the most widely spoken), others fade into the shadows, all but forgotten. In today’s post we set off on a linguistic odyssey to discover some of the least-spoken languages in the world: genuine linguistic gems, full of curiosities and stories.

Ayapaneco: whispers from the past in Mexico

Our journey begins in Mexico, home to Ayapaneco, an indigenous language on the brink of extinction. Its grammar and structure are highly intricate. In 2011 word went round that only two native speakers remained and that, to make matters worse, they were not on speaking terms. Although the story was denied, the fact is that its speakers number barely a couple of dozen, all of them very elderly. Mexican institutions are working to revive the language through cultural promotion: talks, exhibitions, research projects and more.

Forgotten languages: Livonian

Moving north along the Baltic coast, we come across Livonian. This Finnic-Baltic language has suffered a dramatic decline over the years. With very few speakers, mostly elderly, Livonian is struggling to survive in a world that embraces more dominant languages. Some studies suggest that nobody communicates in Livonian any more.

Njerep in Nigeria

We now head for the border between Cameroon and Nigeria, home to Njerep, a language considered all but extinct. With only five known speakers, none of whom use it as a first language, this Kainji variety is fading with time, taking with it a rich cultural tradition and a unique outlook on the world. Its similarities with other languages in the region have driven its slow decline and also make it very hard to study its etymology and origins.

Ainu: a murmur from Japan

Delving into the history of Japan, we discover Ainu, a language that once resounded across the island of Hokkaido. Cultural assimilation and discrimination, however, have left only a handful of speakers. Despite efforts to revive it, Ainu remains endangered. It takes its name from the tribes who speak it. The Ainu people, estimated at several tens of thousands across Russia and Japan, have turned to other languages as their means of communication.

Al-Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language

Not all of the least-spoken languages are oral. Al-Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language, used by a Bedouin community in Israel, is a fascinating example of a unique form of communication. Although it has few speakers, its cultural importance and the connection it gives this community are of great value.   Had you heard of these languages? Remember that at ALOS we have the best teachers and methods to help you learn and strengthen any language, at your own pace and tailored to you.
