Have you been thinking about getting an English certificate? As you know, the famous First Certificate is the most sought-after qualification of all. This exam, run by Cambridge Assessment English, is recognised worldwide as proof of advanced language skills. In today’s post we look at what makes the First so special, what to expect on the day, and some valuable tips to make sure you are ready to succeed.

What is the First Certificate and why does it matter?

The First Certificate in English, or simply the “First”, is an exam that assesses English language skills at upper-intermediate level, equivalent to B2. The certificate is a gateway to academic and professional opportunities, as it is recognised by companies and universities all over the world. By passing the First you demonstrate not only your command of everyday English, but also your ability to communicate effectively in more complex situations, at a considerable academic level.

Structure of the exam

The First exam has four sections: Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Here is a closer look at each one:

  1. Reading and Use of English: This section measures your reading comprehension and your knowledge of the language at grammatical and lexical level. It includes authentic texts and a range of tasks that challenge your ability to understand and use English accurately.
  2. Writing: Here your ability to express ideas clearly and coherently is assessed. You have to complete two tasks: a piece of writing and an essay. Organising your ideas and the quality of your writing are essential. One tip: try to avoid common, overused expressions, words and phrases.
  3. Listening: This section tests your ability to understand spoken information in a variety of contexts. You will hear recordings of everyday and academic situations and answer questions that assess how well you pick up details and grasp the general ideas of what you are listening to.
  4. Speaking: The final part of the exam involves a face-to-face interview with an examiner. It assesses your ability to communicate effectively, express opinions and take part in discussions.

Tips and tricks to succeed in the First Certificate

  1. Practise regularly: Consistency is key. Set aside time every day to practise all four skills. Steady practice will improve your confidence and your performance.
  2. Get to know the exam format: Familiarise yourself with the structure of the exam and the way each section is marked. This will help you manage your time efficiently on the day. Sample papers are easy to find nowadays.
  3. Specific vocabulary: Build up your vocabulary, especially around topics that come up often in the exam, such as technology, the environment and society. This will let you tackle any topic with confidence and show real fluency in writing and speaking, steering clear of stock phrases.
  4. Read, read and read: Blogs, online newspapers, the books you enjoy… As with any language, reading widens your vocabulary and strengthens your grasp of syntax.
  5. Practise speaking: Speak English as much as you can. Practise with study partners or join a conversation group. There are plenty of options these days: pubs and bars that host language exchanges, online groups and more.
  6. Watch your series and films in the original version:Watching your favourite actors in the original version is an intensive and enjoyable way to strengthen the language. In every episode or film you watch you will pick up a new word or expression. And you will improve your pronunciation too. All upsides!
  7. Sign up for a specific course: Want to sit the First with every guarantee? Sign up for a specific course, where you will prepare for the exam in a focused way. At ALOS we offer courses fully adapted to your needs: timetable, calendar, methodology and more. Check out HERE all the options available.

In short, the First Certificate exam is a chance to open new doors in your academic and professional life. With preparation, practice and confidence, you can take on the First and succeed. Go for it!
