The type of course to study on your language trip
When planning your trip, you have several options as regards the type of course you will take. Language trips abroad usually cover specific, relatively short periods, such as the Easter holidays or, more commonly, the summer. In these cases, courses are generally taught at accredited educational centres and are equivalent to intensive courses. Once you know your language level, the best approach is to fit in a Monday-to-Friday course with normal teaching hours, going to class as if it were school or college. This type of trip also offers the option of specialised courses, for example ones devoted to a particular professional field. Or themed courses linked to a complementary activity, such as a sports or music camp, where you combine language learning with other classes and activities.
What are the best dates?
As we said, the holidays are the best time to travel, since they allow the student to keep to their usual academic rhythm. Language trips are therefore an ideal educational complement. The next interesting dates are the summer holidays. For this year, 2023, general stays run between 25/26 June and 27/28 August. Within that two-month window you can fit in your language trip according to your availability and needs. It is the ideal period, covering the end of one school year and the start of the next, with a few days either side. Exceptionally, and much less commonly, you can also organise your trip for the Christmas holidays. It is a shorter period and coincides with traditional family celebrations, but it can be a good alternative for a more intense, focused experience.
Small tricks for your language trip
To finish, here are a few small tricks that can make your trip an even better experience:
- Set your mobile phone to the new language. You will force yourself to see everyday life a little further from your own language and you will get comfortable with certain terms.
- Create or join a WhatsApp group with your travel companions in which your own language is not spoken. You will stay connected with your friends and practise the language at the same time.
- Keep a diary of your experience, but write it in the language you are learning. It is a way of making yourself write, it will serve as a reminder in years to come and it is a lovely way of setting down everything you have lived through.
