Language trips are a fantastic way to learn a new language. Live a unique experience abroad, learn or improve another language and discover new cultures. In this first post we explain a few general points.

At ALOS we are convinced that language trips are an ideal complement for learning a language, or improving skills in one, in a way that would otherwise not be nearly as quick or effective. What exactly do these language trips involve? As you probably know, it is possible to travel for specific, relatively short periods to schools and centres abroad, on trips planned and arranged from Valencia on an “all-inclusive” basis. Although there are options for adults, these are above all trips aimed at children and young people, so that they can spend several weeks abroad attending classes.

Which country?

Which countries are the most usual to travel to? From Valencia, the most widespread and convenient trips are those within Europe. The United Kingdom has always been the destination par excellence for learning English. Despite Brexit coming into force, cities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland such as London, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Oxford and Torbay still have an enormous educational community, with thousands of foreign students of all ages. Malta is another good option for learning English. It is a far more affordable destination financially and in recent decades it has built an educational network entirely geared to the foreign student. The Nordic countries, where English is a second language, are also a good alternative for language trips. Outside Europe, the United States has likewise built strong links to attract Spanish travellers. Cities such as New York and Fort Lauderdale (Florida) are much in demand. If you opt for French or German, the best options are obviously to travel to France and Germany.

Language trips: with a family or in a hall of residence

Another of the main points to consider when choosing a language trip from Valencia is deciding whether to stay with a family or in a hall of residence. Each of the two options has its advantages. If you live with a family, you will have the comforts of home, and you will also be able to immerse yourself in the day-to-day life, society and culture of that country. Host families also tend to have young children, most likely around your own age. If you go for a hall of residence, you will be in a unique study environment and will meet people from many other countries. The pace of life is much more relaxed and, even with the rules and timetables, you will enjoy a great deal of freedom.

Try not to stick with other Spaniards!

One final piece of advice. Wherever you travel, you are very likely to come across fellow Spaniards who, like you, are in another country to learn a new language. Ideally, try not to form a closed group of friends with them, because that will severely limit your chances of expressing yourself in the local language.
