Which songs do you sing on Christmas Eve, on Christmas Day or at New Year? Stop and think for a moment, and make a list. How many of them are in Spanish and Spanish in origin? And how many are in (or from) other languages? This week we want to take you on a short tour of Christmas songs so that you are never short of material over the festive season.
All I want for Christmas is You
You either love it or hate it. Ever since Maria Carey released it in 1994, this song has become a Christmas landmark. Year after year it plays everywhere, Christmas lights are switched on to it, it gets covered, different celebrities sing it… A true Christmas anthem which, whether we like it or not, has become part of Christmas itself.
Las muñecas de Famosa
“Las muñecas de famosa se dirigen al portal…” (“The Famosa dolls are heading for the manger…”) Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Another song that cannot be missing from Christmas Eve dinner in Spain. It was back in the 1970s that the toy brand Famosa created this carol for a television advert that drilled into our heads every Christmas, year after year. So much so that the song is now counted as one more carol in the Spanish songbook.
Last Christmas
Released in 1984, it has been with us year after year as yet another carol that no Christmas playlist can do without. And although the song is about grieving a failed love, few people notice and everyone sings along happily. One curious fact: the singer, George Michael, died on 25 December 2016.
Feliz Navidad
It takes us back to 1970, when José Feliciano first sang it in Spanish with one line in English. Another song that has been covered and sung by countless famous artists.
Jingle Bell Rock
From 1957 and as fashionable now as it was then. Different artists have covered it, sung it and used it in TV series and films. We are fairly sure you do not need to open YouTube to know which song we mean.
