Tourism and languages: the Semana Santa Marinera

With Valencia’s biggest festival, Las Fallas, now behind us, the time of Easter and Holy Week arrives. Here, the great Christian festive occasion takes on a special colour in the seafront districts through a celebration quite unlike any other: the Semana Santa Marinera (Seafarers’ Holy Week).

Every year during Holy Week, Valencia is transformed into a setting all of its own, where tradition, religion and the sea come together in a very special celebration: the Semana Santa Marinera. This event, held in Valencia’s maritime districts such as El Cabanyal, El Canyamelar and El Grau, is a unique display of the culture and customs rooted in our city. This year, the festival begins on Friday 22 March (Friday of Sorrows) and ends on Sunday 31 March (Easter Sunday). The Semana Santa Marinera is a one-of-a-kind experience that combines religious devotion with maritime traditions. Over these days, the streets fill with solemn processions, events and gatherings of every kind.

The Semana Santa Marinera and the sea

What makes the Semana Santa Marinera even more special is its connection with the sea. Valencia is a city that has kept a close relationship with the Mediterranean throughout its history, and that relationship is reflected in its Holy Week celebrations. One of the most striking processions is that of the Cristo del Grao, which takes place in Valencia’s emblematic port. In this procession, the image of Christ is carried by boat by fishermen while the faithful accompany it from the shore or from small vessels, creating a remarkable scene. As well as the processions, the Semana Santa Marinera offers a wide range of cultural and culinary activities. The craft and local food markets are a perfect chance to discover the flavours and typical products of the area, as well as the maritime districts themselves. For those who want to immerse themselves further in the history and culture of this celebration, guided visits to churches and museums are organised, where you can learn about the importance of Holy Week in Valencia and its links with the sea.

Another date for visitors

At ALOS we are passionate about tourism and travel, which give full meaning to spreading languages and to discovering new cultures and traditions. This year you can consult the FULL PROGRAMME of the festival on the official website. You can also download the official PROCESSIONA app for Android or for iOS

In short, Valencia’s Semana Santa Marinera is much more than a religious celebration. It is a unique cultural experience that brings together faith, tradition and the sea in an unforgettable event. If you have the chance to come to Valencia during Holy Week, don’t miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in this fascinating seafaring celebration.
