Not many weeks ago we told you about the option of summer camps for the youngest members of the family, but abroad. Well, today we want to tell you that there are language immersion courses you can take without leaving the country.
What are language immersion courses and what do they involve?
Language immersion courses, as the name itself suggests, are courses in which, intensively (it might be one week, two, and so on, depending on the option you choose), you spend 24 hours a day speaking that language.
They are designed so that you are in the language all day, from breakfast until bedtime, with teachers and conversation assistants. Your day therefore starts at breakfast with other students and teachers, with a teacher or assistant at every table, and speaking your mother tongue is completely forbidden.
Classes start straight afterwards: eight intensive hours with a one-hour break for lunch (during which the teachers and assistants are also at the tables with the students). For the afternoons: Activities and outings are organised around the city with students and teachers, so the rhythm of speaking the foreign language is kept up. And the day ends at dinner: as happens throughout the day and at every meal, students share it with teachers and assistants too.

Without realising it, if you are on a language immersion course, in one week you learn far more than in three months of classes. Why? Here are the reasons. On the one hand, you spend every waking hour speaking that language. Which means that you never switch off and you get far more out of every concept and everything you learn. You have the chance to put it into practice and, without noticing, you internalise what you have learnt much more deeply. On the other hand, you stop thinking in your own language, even if you are not aware of it, and those thoughts start coming in the language you are studying. With full exposure to the language, your ability to communicate will grow, as will your confidence when speaking. Everyone on the course is at roughly the same level, so the fear we tend to have of speaking in public in another language disappears. And of course, we must not forget vocabulary. Being in different situations means we need to talk about topics we do not usually cover in that language, which makes us learn a great many more words.
Taking a language immersion course is a unique experience, whether you do it abroad or opt to do it in your own city. Simply moving in an environment that is not your own, being with people you did not know before and facing situations you are not used to will give you a freedom you do not expect. A language immersion course is far more than a course: it is an unforgettable experience that will also change the way you see that language and motivate you to keep learning and improving it.
