Cambridge or Aptis: which should you choose?

Ejemplo de examen oficial de inglés.

Are you thinking of certifying your level of English but cannot decide between Cambridge and Aptis?
That decision can be crucial for your professional or academic career. Both certifications are backed by internationally recognised institutions and offer different advantages depending on what you need.

Command of English has become an essential skill in academic and professional life alike. An official certification not only validates your level of competence, it also opens doors to educational and career opportunities abroad.

Cambridge English offers a range of exams structured around the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), covering everything from basic levels (A2) to advanced ones (C2). These certifications are widely accepted by universities and employers around the world. On the other hand, Aptis ESOL is a multi-level test developed by the British Council, designed to assess English language skills efficiently and offering a flexible, affordable option for a range of purposes.

When choosing between Cambridge and Aptis, it is essential to understand the features, advantages and limitations of each exam. This analysis will help you make an informed decision based on your particular needs.

What do the Cambridge and Aptis exams involve?

Cambridge English exams

Cambridge English exams are designed to assess English language skills thoroughly. One of the main features of the Cambridge English exams is that they are structured by specific levels, which means you choose the exam that matches the level you want to certify. The best known certifications are:

  • Young Learners (YLE) – For primary school children
  • A2 Key (KET) – Basic level
  • B1 Preliminary (PET) – Intermediate level
  • B2 First (FCE) – Upper intermediate level
  • C1 Advanced (CAE) – Advanced level
  • C2 Proficiency (CPE) – Full command of the language

Unlike Aptis, the Cambridge exams do carry the possibility of passing or failing. That means you have to reach a minimum score to obtain the certificate for the level in question. If your result falls slightly below that level, in some cases you may receive a certificate for the level below, but not always. That is why it is essential to prepare thoroughly for the exam at the exact level you need.

Each exam assesses the four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. They also include a use of English section that measures grammar and vocabulary. The exams are taken at authorised centres or on a computer (Computer Based) and last roughly 4 hoursin total. They are designed to assess all language competences comprehensively and are divided into the following sections:

  • Reading & Use of English: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Writing: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Listening: 45 minutes
  • Speaking: between 12 and 15 minutes

It is worth noting that the Speaking section is taken in pairs and may be scheduled on a different day from the rest of the exam. This detailed structure allows a thorough assessment of all the candidate’s skills, although it also means more intensive preparation and a greater commitment of time.

The Aptis ESOL exam

Aptis ESOL is a flexible, modern test that assesses English language skills. Developed by the British Council and aimed at people aged 16 and over, Aptis is designed to adapt to different contexts and needs. It is, however, only valid in Spain..

One particular feature of Aptis is that it works as a multi-level test: instead of passing or failing, the candidate sits the whole exam and, based on their performance, is assigned a level ranging from A1 to B2 in the case of Aptis General..

If your aim is to certify a higher level, such as C1 or C2, you will need to opt for Aptis Advanced, designed specifically to assess advanced language competences. This format makes it a very useful tool for gauging someone’s real level of English precisely and quickly.

Each version of the exam includes modules on grammar and vocabulary, reading, listening, writing and speaking. Results are delivered within 48 to 72 hours, and the exam can be taken at authorised centres or online, depending on availability.

The full Aptis exam lasts around 3 hours, although that can vary slightly depending on the pace of the test and whether all the modules are taken. Here is how the time is distributed across the sections:

  • Grammar and vocabulary: 25 minutes
  • Speaking: approximately 12 minutes
  • Writing: 50 minutes
  • Listening: 50 minutes
  • Reading: 30 minutes

Bear in mind that, depending on the version of the exam (General, Advanced or Teachers), some of these times may be adjusted, but broadly speaking this is the standard structure of Aptis. Each module is also taken independently, which allows a degree of flexibility in organising the exam.
